PHE is organized annualy since its foundation in 1998; by now it has become one of the most prestigious international photography festivals, it attracts more than seven hundred thousand people each year. Every year the festival is devoted to one topic chosen by the general curator. From 2011 to 2013, that person is Gerardo Mosquera who has chosen for this edition From Here. Context and Internationalization.

Mosquera participated in ACAX’ Check-in Budapest curatorial visitor program in April 2011. As a result of his visit he invited Lilla Szász to participate in the festival. Her participation is supported by ACAX | Agency for Contemporary Art Exchange department of Ludwig Museum, Budapest.

By the time of his death in 2004, the leading New York fashion photographer Richard Avedon had achieved star status; Richard Billingham attained international renown in 1997, when he took part in the controversial exhibition Sensation at London’s Royal Academy. Paz Errázuriz began her career in the 1980s, under the shadow of the Chilean military dictatorship; the young Lilla Szász started out in 2000, and soon made her name in Europe, the United States and Asia.

Working from different perspectives, these four photographers focus on bizarre – often undecipherable – situations, capturing unique moments of trust, candour and tenderness in the people who inhabit them. At once familiar and mysterious, these photographs are the ‘here’ of a series of extraordinary encounters between photographers and their subjects.

In his photographs, Richard Avedon (United States, 1923–2004) subverts the rules of the flattering portrait and the commercial image, placing iconic celebrities at a point midway between the serious and the grotesque. Richard Billingham (United Kingdom, 1970) creates a sordid yet tender visual diary of this father, Ray. Paz Errázuriz (Chile, 1944) highlights the resilience of people living on the fringes of the system, people who have been dragged down into poverty. A sense of humour coupled with sincere respect pervades the work of Lilla Szász (Hungary, 1977), whose portrayal of everyday scenes reflects the photographic process and her own personal commitment. Here we are examines the possibility of projecting complex, unusual universes beyond their contexts.

Curators: Gerardo Mosquera and Mónica Portillo
